Physical Education

This course investigates how physiological, psychological and biomechanical factors combine together to influence the quality of performance in a variety of physical activities. It also investigates the socio-cultural and historical effects on participation in physical activity and how performance can be improved through practice and by analysis and evaluation. In the practical unit, students will be assessed in their selected practical activity where they may choose between performing and coaching.

What skills will I develop?

You will develop the ability to use theoretical knowledge to analyse a sporting performance.

You will develop your independent research and evaluative skills to prepare you for higher education in the Sport Science field of study.

You will also develop your practical sporting skills within the practical module.

What topics will I study?

Component 1 – Examination: Physiological factors affecting performance. (2 Hours, -30%)

  • Section A: Anatomy & Physiology
  • Section B: Exercise Physiology
  • Section C: Biomechanics

Component 2 – Examination: Psychological factors affecting performance. (1 Hour – 20%)

  • Section A: Acquiring Movement Skills
  • Section B: Exercise Psychology

Component 3 – Examination: Socio-Cultural and contemporary issues in sport. (1 Hour – 20%)

  • Section A: Contemporary Issues in Sport
  • Section B: History of Sport

Component 4 – Coursework: Performance within Physical Education. (Oral & Performance – 30%)

  • Section A: Sports Performance or Coaching
  • Section B: Evaluation & Analysis of Performance oral (EAPI)

Where does the course lead?

This course gives a good basis for degrees such as Sports Science, Sports Therapy, Sports Coaching and PE Teaching as well as careers in the leisure and recreation industry, the armed forces or the police.
