French
The French, German, Italian and Spanish courses develop language skills and explore topics such as lifestyle, youth issues, travel, education, and the environment. Background studies include the culture, history and contemporary issues in the relevant country. Lessons are conducted in the foreign language and involve reading, discussion, listening and pair work. The Department organises an exchange programme and students can participate in foreign trips designed to enhance language skills and provide an insight into the country visited.
And afterwards... Languages are an advantage for any student wishing to work in an international context: travel, business, international trade, journalism or large organisations. Very good linguists could move on to become interpreters and translators. Knowledge of a language vastly increases chances for employment and allows mobility in today’s shrinking world.
