Film Studies

In the AS year students build their awareness of film form. They will explore how mise-en-scene, performance, cinematography, editing and sound go together to create meaning in film. They will undertake practical and written tasks to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. They will be encouraged to develop a keen awareness of the role of the audience in making meanings from film, in particular reflecting on their own role as spectators. Students will also investigate the film as a business, looking closely at production, distribution and marketing strategies including an examination of the role of stars in the promotion of films.

In A2, students will undertake further study of films through researching a topic of their choice along with a creative project. They will also extend their knowledge of world cinema and they will explore some key styles of film and issues such as censorship and the auteur debate.

And afterwards… Students will be able to go into a variety of careers which require good communication and analytical ability as well as careers in writing, publishing, film journalism and television or film personnel.
