Woking College Theatre Company swept the boards at the Elmbridge Drama Festival last week end competing against 12 other adult and student theatre groups, winning Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor as well as best Stage Presentation.
Woking College Theatre Company made up of a group of eleven talented actors entered into the Elmbridge Theatre Festival and performed at Walton Playhouse Theatre over the weekend commencing on Friday 5th March.
They won the following awards, Best Youth Play, Best Director, Best Youth Actor went to James Hort and Best Supporting Youth Actors went to Emilie Barrett and Lauren Hamblin. They were also the winners of the Best Play at the festival and got through to the quarter finals, held on Sunday 7th March.
Even more success was to come as they won another award for Stage Presentation and were delighted to win and progress to the semi-finals of the All England Theatre Festival, which will be held in May at South Grinstead.
The challenging play they performed was ‘The Underground Lovers’ by a French absurdist playwright Jean Tardieu. The play is based on the underground and has a love story at its core. The male lead, He, has to overcome several eccentric characters, that become his obstacles, in order to reach his love. The creative ensemble was captivating with their physical performance and live music.
Claire Nevers, the director commented “I was so pleased that the student’s hard work, talent and commitment was recognised and rewarded. We are all excited to get the chance to perform it again at the next round!” James Hort, winner of Best Youth Actor said he was “delighted that the Underground Lovers was such a success. Our hard work and commitment to the piece really paid off”.
